This is another glimpse from our Panama trip, secifically in the Cosco Viejo neighborhood of Panama City. El Arco Chato is a centuries old archway spanning the length of Iglesia Santo Domingo. It is considered a feat of engineering that such a large archway is still able to stand against the test of time without any supports to help hold it up. Iglesia is also an Unesco World Heritage Site.
This area of the city is marked with bi-leveled structures, and pastel paintjobs reminiscent of the French Quarter in New Orleans. There is a long history of Spanish European inquisition, colonization, and explotation of the native peoples of Panama. The Port of Panama was also used as a key asset in the slave trade in the New World of the Pacific. Panamanians where even recruited to fight in the crusades.
